Pub crawl ends after 1500km and 238 bars

AFTER 52 days, 1,500km, over 238 bars and hundreds of pints, the longest pub crawl came to an end at Ireland's most northerly pub yesterday.

Australian native, Tim Goodacre (25), pictured above by Trevor McBride, declared himself ecstatic as he supped his last official pint in Farren's Bar, Malin Head, Co Donegal, 52 days after setting off from Ireland's most southerly pub - Danny Mike's Bar on Cape Clear Island, off the Cork coast.

Tim, who walked the whole way with a stuffed donkey called Asal on his back raised over €3,000 for Ireland's only donkey sanctuary in Cork.

"I am over the moon. I'm absolutely ecstatic that I made it and achieved something for myself," he said.

His plan had been to stop for a drink in every pub he passed and then ask the barman to recommend another one. "This made it harder, but I cannot put into words what an adventure it has been. I have no idea how much I drank. Lets just say it was more than 238 pints, but I've lost a fair bit of weight and I feel healthier and fitter than when I started out," he said.

Tim, from Perth, Western Australia, prompted end-of-journey celebrations when he walked into the Seaview Tavern near Malin Head yesterday. Then he realised that Farren's, just across a narrow inlet, was the most northerly by about 20 metres.

Tim reckons the only negative experience was when somebody stole Asal in Letterkenny. But after considerable local publicity it was returned within a couple of days by somebody who said they found it in a cupboard.
